MgO for Flue Gas Desulfurization(FGD)
To protect the environment and human health, the FGD process is necessary for some industrial processes with high sulfur level in their gaseous effluent. And MgO/Mg(OH)2 have proved to be very good solutions. Compared with typical caustic soda or lime based solutions, MgO can be safer, simpler and easier to maintain with better economy.
The main reaction is as following:
MgO+H2O → Mg(OH)2
Mg(OH)2+SO2→ MgSO3+H2O
2MgSO3+O2→ MgSO4
MgSO3+H2O+SO2→ MG(HSO3)2
Mg based FGD is widely applied in Japan, and has also been growing fast in China.

MgO for Watertreatment
Mg(OH)2 can be a good replacement for caustic soda and lime, White caustic soda and lime have traditionally been used for many years to achieve the watertreatment reaction. But magnesium hydroxide has a number of advantages over lime and caustic soda.
Safety: Magnesium hydroxide and MgO is nonhazardous and nontoxic. But caustic soda and lime can cause damage if contacted with eyes, and caustic soda have strong corrosivity.
Heavy Metals removal: Mg(OH)2 can supply the hydroxyl ion by dissolution for metal precipitation as the hydroxide. And magnesium hydroxide can also remove metals through surface absorption.
Mg(OH)2 have more advantage as better pH control, Sluge volume, handling requirements and Environmental impact etc..
Mg(OH)2 can also use in odor and corrosion control in sanitary systems.

Based on new IMO regulations effect in 2020 for SOx, all vessel SOx emission should be lower than 0.5%, Magnesium based desulfurization has always been working accordingly on vessel for the solution. At the moment, the popular system is simply to apply sea water into the open loop, which doesn’t need add any chemical agent. This method has been widely adopted except a few regions.
Mg based desulfurization can drop the SOx to lower than 0.1%, and the chemical agent is more safe to handle and use compared with caustic soda. Basically, the fundamental is same with FGD in land but the whole system on vessel will be smaller.
Mg vs caustic soda:
More safe: MgO is often considered as a common chemical product, non-corrosiveness, non-poisonous, easy to operate by seamen.
More convenient: MgO can be supplied as powder, easy to carry across all over the world, and needs smaller space to be stored on board.
More economical: MgO is less expensive than caustic soda, and less standard required than caustic soda in scrubber system.
